There is an issue that will haunt every single relationship, no matter what two people are involved, and this is money! Finances are a part of every couple's lives. From who will foot the bill on the first date to who will handle the bills in a marriage, money can break a relationship, so here is a guide to dealing with financial issues that come up when dating! If you're looking for dating, there are certainly a lot of issues you will have to juggle and it might be overwhelming to think of the future. But if you're not prepared for that future, is there really any point to dating online? Probably not. So it's a good idea to acknowledge from the get-go that money is a touchy subject and it can bring out the very worst in people!
What is the best way do deal with a topic that no one wants to talk about? Well, you have to talk about it. Singles battling over a check at the restaurant on their first date or a married couple wondering about expenses – open, candid communication is absolutely necessary. Especially in the beginning stages of a relationship, it's important that the two of you learn what each other's expectations are. Are you more frugal than your mate? Do you plan to go to college and then pursue your career? Do you already have a stable job; does your mate feel threatened by that? Do you want to someday be able to stay at home and raise children while your spouse works? These are all huge issues that of course revolve around money. And they must all be tackled head on.
There is still more to talk about! If one partner makes more money than the other, it can have emotional costs. It's vital that you confront this early on. If you enjoy spending lots of money on your significant other, say so. If you need to spend less money, say so! There is no right or wrong thing to say; the only mistake is to not say anything at all.
This last piece of advice about single dating and marriages is make sure all your ducks are in a row. It's okay to benefit from the income of your spouse so that you can stay at home or gain an education. But make sure that you have everything you need to be financially independent – skills, drive, savings. This way in the case of a breakup or if your significant other loses his or her job, the stress that money can cause will be greatly lowered.
