Office romances used to be strictly forbidden. There were company regulations, which explicitly stated that dating a coworker is a taboo. Even though such companies still exist, generally office romances are not considered a reason for dismissal any more. Of course, there are companies, even in the US and Western Europe, which still ban office romances. However, the trickiest part is when office romances are not formally banned but are informally unacceptable. Unfortunately, there are many such workplaces and if you happen to work in one of them, you'd better forget about having an office affair.

Generally there is no legal reason why office romances should be banned but as reality shows, an office romance can land you into trouble. Dating a peer (as opposed to your boss) is more acceptable but still you can't say that this is a safe option. The reasons for that are numerous and if you really value your job, you'd better refrain from dating a co-worker. Coworkers can interfere or simply be jealous that you have found love, while they are stuck in unhappy relationships and this will cause all sorts of backstabbing.

One of the nastiest sides of office romances is when the affair ends. The tears are especially bitter, if you have been dating your boss or somebody you depend on. In many cases the end of the office affair means that you will have to pack your things and search for another job. So, when you start an office affair, always have in mind that it is possible to lose both your job and your love. Knowing this unpleasant truth can save you a lot of pain, if these unpleasant events happen to you.

On the other hand, there are many cases when office romances flourish, so you can't say that dating a coworker is always a mistake. Try to judge if the atmosphere in your company is friendly towards office romances and if it is, then jump into the deep waters. There are so many examples when coworkers manage to work and live successfully, so don't reject the possibility that this might happen to you as well and, if given the chance, don't miss the opportunity for personal happiness and professional development!

If you are into an office romance, you might want to keep it secret at first. Some secrecy always helps because if you see that the co-worker you are dating is not the best match you can have, then it is times better when not everybody around knows about it. When you have dated for a while and you see that the things will work, you can announce your affair but even then don't forget that your office is not a private boudoir and avoid public display of affections. Kissing and hugging in front of your colleagues is certainly not what a true professional will do!
