Keep your credibility in tact by telling the truth up front and always, even if it hurts. If it does hurt the other party, tough. Know it and move on if they can't handle it. Why play games? Truth and respect go hand in hand, and most people respect you for telling truths.

Likewise, if you don't seek intimacy with those you meet online, don't set yourself - or the other person - up for this. Enjoy dinner out in public with other people around; attend movies with others, etc…in short, do things along those lines. And give up on a date if need be. With online dating there will always be lots of other folks available all around the clock.

Now, if a friend is what you are looking for out of this relationship, it is probably best to admit it up front. And if it's intimacy, ditto: tell the other person that. Of course, if you seek a soul mate or other to spend your life with, say it is so, too.
